Fishing Trip

The absolute highlight of the annual summer trip to Fulton was when Pop and Kyle took Jack and Max fishing. (How, Kristie, Charlie and Isaac came along, too.) They all went down to How's Cousin Rick's place, which is on Mississippi River backwater, and also afforded the use of a second boat — that's how Kristie got some of the good pictures. I most definitely wish I had been there in person, but the excitement in Max's voice when he got a chance to tell me all about the event was pretty special as well.

In all, they only caught one fish and it made its way back into the river. But both big boys seemed to have a pretty good time out there, Charlie had a good time on the boat and the shore, and Kristie captured some really spectacular photos. Hopefully they'll both remember this joyous experience and also get more and more chances to make new memories.

How's House

As noted, Kristie and the boys left Aug. 10 for How's House. It wasn't the best scheduling, but a variety of complicating factors left this our only choice to get them (close to) a week in Fulton. Kristie took a bunch of great shots while they were there, here's a few to start off:

Parade Day

The second weekend of August, in addition to being near my birthday, also usually means it's time for the Gurnee Days festival. And while we're not really big on the rides in the park and the fair food (remember, we sometimes go a full week eating naught bit Six Flags dinners), we never ever miss the parade. Sort of.

See, this year was Max's first chance to walk with our Cub Scout Pack. We decided rather than drop off a parent with both other boys, we'd park the van near the end of the route, walk to the Pack as a family and then just do the parade together. Max had just met many of the other kids in his Tiger den the day before at a picnic. He was super excited to wear his uniform for the first time, and Jack tends to enjoy the responsibility of being in the parade, though he's also content to watch and try to harvest candy.

Long story short, we never did find the Pack. We ended up walking the equivalent of the length of the parade route three or four times over. That afternoon Kristie was taking the boys to Fulton for a week — the only reason she didn't leave earlier in the day was so we could do the parade. And so we ended the morning (early afternoon, by that point) with not a lot of happiness all around. But not before I got these pictures.

Waterfall

In early August, when the sun was hot and maternal patience short, Kristie came up with a great way to let the kids burn off some energy in the best possible place: not in the house. With some aluminum foil, our front steps, a hose, leaves and, most importantly, gravity, Max (with some help from Charlie and Isaac) set about constructing a handmade waterfall. Max especially was proud of his engineering skill, and the runoff more or less went straight into the yard, which at that point was in no danger of being oversaturated.

Rounding out July

And now, in the further interest of expedience, I finish catching up with July by dumping a bunch of pictures from home, Six Flags and our neighborhood park. There's a video in there, too.

Kim Time!

After the rocket launch we headed down to Pops & K's to spend some time with Aunt Kim, who was visiting from California. Apparently I didn't do a good job of taking pictures during this visit since I have only these to share, but I promise we loved spending some time together!
