Starting November

The first is from Nov. 2, the latter two are from Nov. 3. Once I get the camera's memory card downloaded, I'll work on getting all the way caught up to the present.

In the hospital

The less said about Isaac's stint in the pediatric wing of our friendly neighborhood hospital, the better. But we did take a few photos, starting with what has to be a contender for most depressing hospital room window view in America.

Halloween, part three

Fall fest Saturday, trick-or-treating Sunday... and on Wednesday, a kindergarten costume parade! While Kristie and Isaac were in the hospital and Jack was in school, Charlie and I swung by the primary building to wave to our favorite mouse.

Halloween, part 2

As noted earlier, our neighborhood fall fest is the Saturday before Halloween and trick-or-treat hours in the village are the next Sunday afternoon. Right out of the gate (literally between our house and next door) Charlie was struggling to keep up. After a few blocks of valiant effort, I was able to get him back home (where he eventually powered down for a much-needed nap) and escorted the big boys on rest of their adventure. Isaac stayed home the whole time, but I imagine all four will be involved in 2014.

Halloween, part one

This is our fifth Halloween since moving to this neighborhood. We've adjusted well to the schedule of trick-or-treating always falling on the Sunday afternoon before Oct. 31, and also to the annual neighborhood fall festival taking place the preceding Saturday. There was no petting zoo this year (no complaints from this dad) but the old standbys of hot chocolate, a table full of treats we can't safely feed to half our kids, a raffle drawing for every child who shows up wearing a costume and the least exciting hayrack ride of all time. But when you're two and you've never been on any type of hayrack ride, well, it's kind of a big deal.

How and Pop drove out Saturday morning just to bring Max's mouse costume to him. It's one worn by Kristie and her siblings (and probably some cousins along the way) and, while showing its age, certainly makes for an adorable child. Even better is the matching adult costume How wears, and that she was able to go to the park with us while Kristie stayed home with a hungry Isaac. But not before we got some pictures.

Who wears it better?

Photo catchup

As has surely been noticed, I've gotten behind on posting photos here. Spending a few days in the hospital with a sick newborn will do that to a guy's productivity. The downside is I haven't posted pictures since Oct. 20. The upside is now I have a boatload to dump all at once for your viewing pleasure.

We pick up where we left off, on Sunday, Oct. 20. How and Kristie set up a newborn photo shoot for the little guy, and right before we left a bath was in order. How did the washing and Charlie did the helping.

That's a coincidence, not a real smile. From Hollands at Home 2013

Isaac is far too young to qualify for nap attacks, since they are in no way spontaneous. In fact, napping is pretty much his prime activity. Still, he's cute when he sleeps.

Saturday

We made good use of our first Saturday at home with Isaac. Charlie and I slept in quite a bit while Jack and Max played video games in the basement. Once the rain let up, Jack and Max took it upon themselves (or maybe they were strongly encouraged) to rake leaves in the front yard. After Charlie and I got back from grocery shopping, I was able to mow the lawn, among keeping up with laundry. How again mastered the kitchen while also managing to keep one eye on Kristie and one eye on the baby, not to mention folding clothes every time I turned around. Pops and K came over for dinner, but poor Charlie didn't quite have enough gas in the tank to stay coherent, falling asleep with his face on a computer while he was trying to watch "SpongeBob."

Around the house

Our first week home with Isaac has been fairly low key. Aside from the fact we all have to pause a moment to say his name correctly (instead of calling him Charlie or Floyd) — and the fact that back on Tuesday I said Isaac's name and Max gave me a look that said "Isaac Who?" — we seem to be adjusting fairly well.

How has been here since Monday evening, and working so hard our house is actually in better shape than it was before the baby, and probably before the plumbing issues. We have a fridge full of good food, and she's been folding all the laundry I wash. The division of labor puts me mostly in charge of the big three and her mostly in charge of Kristie and Isaac, especially overnight. Of course, the big boys work hard to get their time with her as well, and Kristie still needs me to drive her places (so far just the pediatrician and the very nice lactation consultant), so everyone's getting a nice mix and no one feels left out. It seems Charlie has been glued to me a bit, in a good way, but that's probably because he's the only one not in school. He and I have been basically repeating the Saturdays we spend together, and it's incredible how much fun it is just to do everyday things with him.

I'll probably write at length soon about the unreal investment by all the grandparents, without whom we could not have made it through the last ten days or so. But for now I need to put these photos up and get some sleep. I think all of these are from Thursday and Friday.
